The news is buzzing when it comes to Swedish flower pollen extract, and there’s good reason.

Discovered first in Sweden and used for many years, flower pollen extract has been credited with having numerous health benefits.

But what is it? Flower pollen extract, not to be confused with bee pollen, is the pollen found in plants before bees extract it, so it is a clean substance. Specifically, flower pollen extract comes from the core of the pollen grain, rather than the whole pollen grain. This nutrient-rich extract contains a rich amount of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which have notable health benefits.  It has very few contaminants (no bee parts or dirt!); is easier to digest, which leads to better nutrient absorption; and is less likely to trigger allergies.

The use of flower pollen extract has been recognized as a successful non-hormonal method of improving women’s health. Over the past three decades, researchers have conducted numerous studies showing a link between flower pollen extract use and relief for PMS symptoms. Women who took the extract experienced less water retention and cramping; a more positive mood; better sleep; less irritability, and overall improvements in well-being.

In one study, thirty-two women between the ages of 27 and 50 were given flower pollen extract to see its effects on PMS symptoms. After two months, overall PMS symptoms were reduced by between 27 and 57 percent – a significant improvement with minimal risks of negative side effects. What’s more, PMS weight gain was reduced by approximately 50 percent for those women taking the extract and not the placebo.  Now, let’s be honest, any woman would be happy with that!  This study is important because it shows that flower pollen, a natural plant-based ingredient, has minimal risk of adverse effects and can make a noticeable difference in the lives of PMS sufferers.

Many women feel that uncontrollable mood swings are one of their worst PMS symptoms, although, many of us don’t like to admit this while we are PMSing.  According to Alyssa Dweck, a gynecologist at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, there are several reasons why your mood can do a 180 in just a matter of moments and without provocation.  Not only has your serotonin dropped and your hormones are fluctuating like crazy, but you may not be eating right thanks to food cravings, you’ve put exercise on the back burner, and you’re feeling exhausted throughout the day.1

To top it off, you are more susceptible to pain, which can come in the form of cramps, headaches and overall achiness. “Your pain tolerance is at its lowest point during PMS,” says Dr. Julie Holland, author of Moody Bitches.1 Not surprisingly, you’re not a happy camper and chances are you’re not the only one who can tell. Some women have discovered supplements such as Serenol, which contain Swedish flower pollen extract and have been known to help with PMS symptoms, especially mood swings and irritability. A reporter at New York Magazine, who felt overwhelmed by her PMS symptoms, including her monster mood swings, decided to give Serenol a try upon the recommendation of her doctor. She was pleasantly surprised to discover that, after taking the dietary supplement for a few weeks, her symptoms were subsiding and she was feeling calmer.2

Dealing with monthly PMS symptoms can be frustrating and painful. However, natural substances such as flower pollen extract, which can be found in various supplements, may help. Of course, it is important to speak to your doctor to discuss your specific symptoms and the best solutions for you and your body.
